The Problem with Full Repository History in CI/CD
As software projects mature, repository history accumulates thousands of commits, merged branches, and historical asset blobs. A full git clone can easily download 1GB to 5GB of data, adding several minutes to every automated build job.
Partial Clone Strategies
- Shallow Clone (
--depth=1): Downloads only the latest commit. Perfect for release builds that do not require commit history. - Blobless Clone (
--filter=blob:none): Downloads all commit trees and history metadata, but fetches file contents only on-demand when checking out files. Ideal for linters, changelog generators, and branch comparisons.
