Node.js Worker Threads vs Cluster Module: Multithreading CPU-Intensive Background Tasks

Understanding the Distinction

Developers frequently confuse Worker Threads and the Cluster module when scaling Node.js applications:

  • Cluster Module: Spawns separate operating system processes sharing a single server port. Each process has its own isolated V8 instance and memory space. Best suited for scaling HTTP web servers across multiple CPU cores.
  • Worker Threads: Executes multiple threads within the same process, sharing memory via SharedArrayBuffer and communicating via MessageChannel. Best suited for CPU-heavy tasks like report generation or data parsing.
