The Limitations of Legacy DOMDocument
For more than 15 years, PHP developers parsing HTML were constrained by libxml2's legacy HTML4 parser. Loading modern HTML5 elements such as <main>, <nav>, <section>, or SVG tags generated false syntax warnings or broken DOM trees. Developers were forced to suppress warnings using libxml_use_internal_errors(true) or bundle heavy third-party userland libraries.
The Solution: Dom\HTMLDocument::createFromString
PHP 8.4 introduces the new Dom\HTMLDocument class, adhering strictly to the WHATWG HTML5 parsing specification. It handles malformed markup gracefully using the exact same parsing algorithms used by modern browsers like Chrome and Firefox.
use Dom\HTMLDocument;
$html = '<article><header><h1>Modern Web Standards</h1></header><p>No more libxml warnings!</article>';
$doc = HTMLDocument::createFromString($html);
$title = $doc->querySelector('article header h1')?->textContent;
echo $title; // "Modern Web Standards"
