The Dual-Write Problem in Distributed Systems
Updating a local database and immediately dispatching an HTTP webhook in the same request often fails: if the database transaction commits but the network call fails, downstream systems desynchronize. The Transactional Outbox pattern resolves this by saving the outgoing event in the database within the exact same atomic transaction.
Asynchronous Dispatch Engine
A separate queue worker continuously polls the outbox table, sends events with exponential backoff retries, and marks events as processed upon receiving HTTP 200 responses.
